What is US Teacher Appreciation Week?

The Origins of This Special Week
The idea of dedicating a time each year to appreciate teachers began in 1944 when Mattye Whyte Woodridge, an Arkansas teacher, started advocating for a national day to celebrate teachers. Woodridge wrote letters to leaders in education and politics, including Eleanor Roosevelt, who supported the idea. It wasn’t until 1984 that the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) designated the first full week of May as Teacher Appreciation Week.
