The Amazing Life of Sea Turtles
Did you know that sea turtles have been living in our oceans for millions of years? These magnificent creatures are like living fossils, a window into the ancient world!
A Turtle’s Home: The Vast Ocean
Sea turtles are found in almost every ocean basin across the world, from the cold waters of the Atlantic to the warmer Pacific and Indian Oceans. They love to travel long distances. For example, the leatherback turtle, the largest of all sea turtles, can grow up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) in length and travel thousands of kilometers across the ocean!
A Journey from Birth
A sea turtle’s life starts in a very special way. Mother turtles come to the shore, dig a nest in the sand, and lay their eggs. After about two months, baby turtles hatch and scurry to the sea, guided by the moonlight. This first journey is vital for them.
What Do Sea Turtles Eat?
Sea turtles have different diets. Green turtles munch on seagrasses and algae, while loggerhead turtles prefer crabs and mollusks. The leatherback turtle, with its soft shell, loves to eat jellyfish!
The Challenges They Face
Sea turtles face many challenges, like changes in their habitats due to human activities and getting caught in fishing nets. But many people and organizations are working hard to protect them.
