To protect themselves from these spirits, the Celts would light bonfires and wear costumes, often made of animal heads and skins. They thought that if they disguised themselves as spirits, the real spirits would leave them alone. Pretty clever, right?

As time passed, the traditions evolved. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as a time to honor all saints. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve, and later, Halloween. During these times, people continued the tradition of dressing up. They would go from door to door, asking for food or money, a practice that might remind you of today’s trick-or-treating!
