Meet the Giraffes!
Have you ever seen a giraffe in real life? They’re the tallest mammals on Earth! Imagine an animal so tall that it can look into a second-story window without even trying. That’s a giraffe for you! They can reach up to 5.5 meters (18 feet) tall. The giraffes’ long necks, which might seem like they have a lot of bones, actually have the same number of bones in their neck as humans—just seven vertebrae, but each one is super long!
What Do Giraffes Eat?
Giraffes are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. Their favorite snack is acacia leaves, which are tough for other animals to reach. How do they manage? With their long necks and even longer tongues! Giraffes have tongues that are about 45 centimeters (18 inches) long and they can twist them around branches to pull leaves off. Their tongue is also a dark color, which might help protect it from sunburn while reaching up into the sunny treetops.
How Giraffes Live
Giraffes live in groups called towers. Yes, a group of giraffes is called a tower—how fitting is that? They roam around in open forests and savannahs in Africa, where they can find plenty of food and space to stretch their long legs. Giraffes don’t need much sleep; they only sleep for about 5 to 30 minutes in a 24-hour period! They usually sleep standing up, which helps them stay alert for any dangers.
The Unique Patterns
No two giraffes have the same pattern of spots. Each giraffe’s pattern is as unique as a human fingerprint! These patterns also help them camouflage with the shadows and light in their natural habitat, making it hard for predators to spot them.
