What Makes a Bee a Bee?
Bees are amazing little creatures. Did you know that there are over 20,000 different species of bees around the world? They come in various sizes and colors, but they all have two things in common: wings and their busy nature.
Bees are known for their role in pollination. This means they help plants grow, breed, and produce food by moving pollen from one flower to another. Thanks to bees, we can enjoy lots of fruits like apples, oranges, and even nuts like almonds!
The Honey Makers
One of the most well-known bees is the honeybee. These bees live in large groups called colonies, which can have thousands of bees, all working together. The queen bee runs the colony while the worker bees go out to collect nectar from flowers.
When they return, they turn the nectar into honey by moving it around in their mouths to dry it out and add special enzymes. This honey is stored in honeycombs inside their hive. Not only is honey delicious, but bees also use it as food to get through colder months.
Busy as a Bee
Bees are very hardworking. A single bee might visit thousands of flowers in one day just to gather enough nectar. That’s a lot of flying! Bees have a special dance, called the waggle dance, which they use to tell other bees where to find the best flowers. Isn’t that a clever way to share information?
